Women's track takes third and men finish fifth at Delaware Invitational

NEWARK, DE- The Wheaton College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed at the University of Delaware Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Delaware Mini-Stadium, as the women placed third in the NCAA Division II/III division and the men took fifth. The women accounted for 96 points and three individual event championships in the seven-team field, while the men tallied 49 points and one event title among the six competing squads.

Capturing top honors for the women was senior Kim Spence (Barrington, NH/Dover) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, junior Kathrine Wallace (Glenmoore, PA/The Hill School) in the high jump and sophomore Kendra Leith (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) in the 5,000-meter run. Spence and Wallace both posted NCAA Division III national meet provisional qualifying standards, with Spence recording a time of 11:17.42 in the 3,000M steeplechase and Wallace clearing 5' 5" in the high jump. Leith finished the 5,000-meter run in 18:45.78, nearly 15 seconds faster than the next closest competitor.

The Lyons finished with four provisional qualifying marks on the day, as junior Kirsten Larsen (Hampden, MA/Minnechaug Regional) and freshman Katelyn Teixeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) joined Spence and Wallace for their performances in the javelin throw. Larsen took a runner-up finish with a heave of 41.66 meters, while Teixeira placed fourth overall with a throw of 39.29 meters.

Wheaton had several top five performances, including freshman Alison Amendola (Franklin, MA/Franklin) and junior Jessica Allegra (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton) in the 200-meter dash, with Amendola placing second in 26.26 and Allegra third in 26.45. Sophomore Christina Langevin (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) finished third in the 5,000-meter run, freshman Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) third in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump, junior Lindsay Whalen (Dedham, MA/Dedham) fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, freshman Crystal Blamy (Walpole, NH/Fall Mountain View) second in the high jump and first-year Hailey Gallant (Ashford, CT/E.O. Smith) tied for third in the pole vault.

Senior Terry Panetta (Hicksville, NY/St. Anthony's) picked up the lone event victory for the men with the top finish in the 1,500-meter run. Panetta finished that race in 4:01.10 and also placed third overall in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.11. Senior Erik Benson (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) took third in the 200-meter dash in 22.70 and fifth in the 100-meter dash in 11.05, while freshman Jonathan Geffrard (Brooklyn, NY/Poly Prep CDS) was fifth in the 200M and sixth in the 100M.

Sophomore Ajay Sisodia (Andover, MA/Andover) took fourth in the 100-meter dash in 11.46, while freshman Thomas Simmons (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) was seventh. Junior Patrick Freytag (Pittsford, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) registered a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in 57.20 and sophomore Ryan English (New Hartford, CT/Northwestern) placed 10th. Sophomore Eric Richardson (Walpole, MA/Bishop Feehan) was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while freshman Matt Peirce (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) finished eighth in the 1,500-meter run.
