Wheaton opens outdoor season at Princeton's Sam Howell InvitationalApril 3, 2004 PRINCETON, NJ- The Wheaton College men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2004 outdoor seasons at the Sam Howell Invitational held at Princeton University's Weaver Stadium this weekend, as the Lyons posted multiple NCAA Division III national meet provisional qualifying standards in the non-scoring meet. Senior Amber James (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury) led the way with a trio of provisional marks in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 4x100-meter relay races. James captured the individual championships in the 100M dash in 12.29 and 200M dash in 24.84 and then anchored the 4x100M relay that finished third overall in 48.95. Joining James was junior Jessica Allegra (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton), sophomore Oly Wirtz (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg) and freshman Alison Amendola (Franklin, MA/Franklin). Junior Kirsten Larsen (Hampden, MA/Minnechaug Regional) also turned in a provisional qualifying performance in the javelin throw, as she topped the competition with a heave of 132' 8". Freshman Katelyn Teixeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) placed third in the event in her first collegiate meet with a throw of 122' 9". Other strong field finishes came from freshman Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) in the high and long jumps, junior Kathrine Wallace (Glenmoore, PA/The Hill School) in the high and triple jumps and freshman Stephanie Cummings (Princeton, MA/Worcester Academy) in the pole vault. Harlow placed second in the high jump at 5' 1" and eighth in the long jump at 16' 5", while Wallace finished fifth in the high jump with the same height as Harlow and fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 35' 7 1/4". Cummings posted a fourth-place finish with a vault of 9' 4 1/4". On the track, Amendola placed fourth in the 200-meter dash in 26.28 and sixth in the 100-meter race in 12.80. Allegra was sixth in the 200M in 25.52 and seventh in the 100M in 12.97, while Wirtz finished 10th in the 100-meter dash in 13.36 and 11th in the 200-meter dash in 27.32. Junior Dan Olson (Voorheesville, NY/Albany Academy) posted Wheaton's lone provisional qualifying standard for the men, as the indoor high jump national champion topped the competition with a jump of 6' 8 3/4". Senior Tyrone McClain (New Haven, CT/Hillhouse) finished ninth in the long jump at 20' 5", while first-year Ryan Fitzgerald (Newport, RI/Rogers) was seventh in the shot put at 41' 8 1/2" and eighth in the discus throw at 115' 1". McClain also anchored Wheaton's second-place 4x100-meter relay team, as sophomore Ajay Sisodia (Andover, MA/Andover) and freshmen Thomas Simmons (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) and John Dunn (Little Compton, RI) fell 43-hundreths of a second short of the top performance with a time of 42.51. Sisodia rounded out his solid meet by placing fourth in the 200M at 22.56 and fifth in the 100M at 11.28. First-year Jonathan Geffrard (Brooklyn, NY/Poly Prep CDS) finished sixth in the 100M with a time of 11.31 and seventh in the 200M at 22.74. Last updated on 4/5/04. |
