Weekly Lyon

Field Hockey (8-3, 2-0) Goes 2-0, Including Six-Goal Win in Lone NEWMAC Contest

The Wheaton College field hockey team won both of its games last week, coming back to defeat Wesleyan University, 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday before dropping New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) counterpart Smith College, 6-0 on Saturday. Senior Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) broke the program record for career assists during the Smith game. The Lyons are tied for first in the NEWMAC with Babson College, which Wheaton opposes on Tuesday.

Against visiting Wesleyan, Dimick played a hand in all three goals, including netting the game-winner during the 82nd minute. The Lyons trailed, 2-0 before Dimick tipped home junior Alisa Ardito's (Branford, CT/Branford) 52nd-minute pass, and Dimick found sophomore Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) for the tying marker off a penalty corner with no time remaining in regulation. Ardito then assisted Dimick's winner, pushing Wheaton to its first victory over Wesleyan in Norton since October 5, 1995. Freshman Cameron Abel (Windham, NH/Salem) finished with five saves in net.

Dimick tied a program record with three assists at Smith while surpassing Shea Clarke's '07 career helpers record of 21. Her first assist on Ardito's 10th-minute tally tied Dimick with Clarke, and she aided goals by freshman Jessica Strock (Centerville, MA/Barnstable) and Block in the 44th and 46th minutes, respectively, to move into first place. Ardito scored again in the 47th minute, and Dimick added markers in the 59th and 64th minutes, with Ardito assisting the final tally. Abel turned aside eight shots, while sophomore Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) made one save in 16 minutes of relief.

Dimick is first at Wheaton in career assists (23) and second in points (91) and goals (34), as she is nine points shy of the 20-year-old standard. Senior Lyndsie Ryalls (Branford, CT/Branford) is third in points (65) and goals (24) and fifth in helpers (17). Ardito is tied for third in assists (19), stands fourth in points (59), and is tied for eighth in goals (20). Dimick's eight assists are three shy of her own single-season program record, her 30 points are the fourth-highest total in program history, and she's fifth with 11 goals. Abel's eight wins are the most by a Wheaton rookie since Marya Payeur '95 had 10 in 1991.

Men's Soccer (8-2-2, 3-0) Wins Two, Including Comeback Triumph in NEWMAC Play

The Wheaton College men's soccer team, which is tied for fifth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) New England poll, extended its winning streak to four behind a pair of victories last week. The Lyons blanked visiting Roger Williams University, 3-0 on Tuesday before rallying for a 3-2 NEWMAC victory at Springfield College on Saturday. Wheaton, which is now 9-0-1 in its last 10 league games, sits alone in first place in the NEWMAC standings.

The Lyons remained undefeated in 12 meetings with Roger Williams. With 8:49 gone, senior Trevor Cote (Portsmouth, RI/Providence Country Day School) converted freshman Josh Solomon's (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) helper, and first-year Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) scored in the 20th minute off classmate David Ferriero's (Medway, MA/Medway) touch. Solomon also assisted freshman Kyle Sye's (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) 35th-minute goal. Freshman Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) had four saves.

Cote's 81st-minute strike pushed Wheaton past Springfield, and Sye tied a school record by assisting all three markers. With the Lyons down, 2-0, Moreira converted Solomon and Sye helpers in the 31st minute before sophomore Tyler Ostholthoff (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) knotted the game in the 39th minute thanks to Sye. Cote then flicked Sye's restart off his head with less than 10 minutes left in regulation for the winner. Freshman Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) made six saves.

Balance has been a key for Wheaton, as seven different players have accounted for eight game-winning goals. Freshmen have not only contributed immensely on the defensive end, as three keepers have combined to play every second this season, but the first-year class has carried the offensive load, as well. Of Wheaton's 28 goals and 29 assists, 19 goals (68%) and 22 assists (76%) have been recorded by freshmen. In 2006, Lyon freshmen accounted for two of 34 goals (6%) and two of 30 assists (7%).

Women's Soccer (10-0-1, 2-0) Wins Twice, Including Late at Regional Rival Amherst

The Wheaton College women's soccer team, which is ranked seventh nationally and first in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), defeated Amherst College, 2-1 on Wednesday before downing Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 7-1 on Saturday. The Lyons extended their league unbeaten streak to 78 games, the second longest in NCAA soccer history regardless of division or gender, and pushed their regular season undefeated run to 26 contests. They are one of three first-place teams in the league, and they host co-leader Springfield College on Tuesday.

Freshman Barrie Lindsay's (Ipswich, MA/Waring School) pair of late goals propelled Wheaton past host Amherst, which ended the Lyons' 2006 NCAA Tournament run. The Lord Jeffs took a 1-0 lead in the 80th minute, but Lindsay scored at 83:11 and 86:09, with each goal assisted by senior Katelyn Brack (Lake Oswego, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) and freshman Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols). Seniors Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) and Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) each made a save, and Cockburn earned the win.

Alvarez netted a natural hat trick during a 6:28 span versus visiting MIT, tallying at 1:41, 3:16 and 8:09 to give Wheaton a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School) scored next before junior Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) and freshmen Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) and Amanda Resendes (Swansea, MA/Joseph Case) added second-half goals. Resendes' marker was the first of her college career. Lindsay and senior Erin Davis (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) each had two assists. Cockburn went untested in the first half, while sophomore Abby Isaac (Larchmont, NY/Proctor Academy) stopped three second-period shots.

Senior Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) is fifth at Wheaton in career points (113), classmate Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) is seventh (92), while Viscomi and senior Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA/Cathedral) are each three shy of the top 10 with 60. Konopka stands sixth in goals (41), while Rabesa is tied for seventh (30). Rabesa is fifth in assists (32), Konopka is tied for sixth (31), and Furr has 24, needing one to slide into 10th. Kronenberg is third in career victories (48).

McManus Draws First Weekly NEWMAC Honor of Career

Sophomore Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) was named NEWMAC Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, September 23, earning the first weekly honor of her career. During a rematch of the 2006 NEWMAC Tournament final, the Lyons picked up a 3-0 win on September 22 at Smith College behind McManus' game-winner in the 14th minute. McManus' goal was her first of the season and stood as her second career winner. A defender, McManus helped Wheaton yield one goal on only 18 shots in nearly 200 minutes of action during the 2-0 week.

Men's Tennis (0-0) Sends Two Players to ITA Regional Tournament at Williams

The Wheaton College men's tennis team was represented on Friday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament at Williams College by sophomore James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Greg Poulin (Boxboro, MA/Home Schooled). The duo narrowly lost in doubles action, 9-8 after dropping a tiebreaker by a 7-3 final. In a consolation match, Little and Poulin fell by an 8-6 score. Little also competed in singles play, falling by a 6-1, 6-1 count.

Women's Tennis (7-1, 3-1) Edges Mount Holyoke in Lone Match of Week

The Wheaton College women's tennis team won for the 11th time in 12 matches during its only action last week, a narrow 5-4 victory over Mount Holyoke College. The Blue and White, which is tied for third in the NEWMAC, avenged a loss to the team that knocked it from the 2006 league tournament.

At Mount Holyoke, a trio of freshmen won their singles matches in straight sets to clinch the team victory. Wheaton took a 2-1 lead after doubles, as the freshman tandems of Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School)/Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) and Chelsea Cordes (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown)/Bethany Pine (Providence, RI/Wheeler School) corralled victories. The win was the first of Pine's college career. In singles play, Geocaris, Teague and freshman Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) each won.

Women's Volleyball (13-6, 2-2) Stays Close with Coast Guard, Places Third at Tournament

The Wheaton College women's volleyball team went 2-3 last week, beginning with a strong showing during a 3-0 (22-30, 26-30, 30-32) loss to United States Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday during a NEWMAC match. Over the weekend, the Lyons split four matches at the Johnson & Wales University Classic, beginning with a 3-0 (11-30, 19-30, 27-30) loss to the hosts and a 3-2 (30-18, 30-24, 26-30, 29-31, 15-13) victory over Framingham State College on Friday. On Saturday, Wheaton downed Johnson & Wales University of Colorado, 3-1 (30-18, 30-10, 24-30, 30-17) before dropping a 3-0 (22-30, 26-30, 26-30) decision to Plymouth State University. The Lyons are tied for fourth in the NEWMAC.

Against visiting Coast Guard, which advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament Elite Eight, Wheaton led by as many as six points in game one and held advantages of 19-11 in the second game and 29-26 in game three before succumbing to a Bear sweep. Freshman Sam Andreacchi (Burlingame, CA/Pinewood School) tallied 12 kills and 14 digs, and classmate Rae Bradley (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) had 11 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Lauren Kraus (Westboro, MA/Westboro) added 11 kills, and freshman Kristen Hunt (Milford, CT/Jonathan Law) had 19 digs. First-year Becca Rose (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) finished with 35 assists and 10 digs.

Andreacchi's double-double of 10 kills and 13 digs led Wheaton against host Johnson & Wales during the tournament, while Kraus chipped in with nine kills. Rose contributed 30 assists, while Hunt and freshman Natasha von Sonn (Burbank, CA/Burbank) had 20 and 12 digs, respectively.

Hunt's 38 digs against Framingham State tied the fourth-highest single-match total in program history, and she became the first Lyon since 2000 to notch a pair of 38-plus-dig matches in one season. Kraus tallied 16 kills and five blocks, while junior Caitlin Farr (Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) had a career-high 12 kills. Von Sonn contributed nine kills and 17 digs, Rose collected 49 assists and 15 digs, and junior Sarah Oster (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln) notched 10 digs.

Von Sonn had 15 kills and seven digs against Johnson & Wales of Colorado, while Kraus added 13 kills and four blocks. Rose had 37 assists and nine digs, while junior Liana Merrill (Northwood, NH/Coe-Brown Northwood Academy) tallied seven aces. Hunt and Farr had 26 and 10 digs, respectively.

The Lyons completed play during a match with Plymouth State, as Andreacchi recorded 12 kills and 12 digs. Rose tallied 30 assists, Hunt had 19 digs, and Oster provided 10 digs. Kraus was named to the all-tournament team after hitting .288 with 45 kills and 11 blocks during the weekend.

Men's and Women's Cross Country Run at Keene State, Brousseau Third for Women

The Wheaton College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Keene State College Invitational on Saturday, as the women placed third out of nine teams and the men took ninth in a 10-team field. Senior Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) finished third in the women's race.

Brousseau's time of 19:05 paced Wheaton, sophomore Katie Pratt (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) took 11th in 20:28, and freshman Ekaterina Gould (Wayland, MA/Wayland) was 16th in 20:48 during her collegiate debut.
