Weekly LyonSynchronized Swimming Places Third Among Six Teams at ECAC ChampionshipThe Wheaton College synchronized swimming team placed third among six institutions over the weekend at the two-day Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship at The College of William & Mary, as senior Megan Kinney (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough School) and freshman Sonvje Ryen (Bozeman, MT/Manhattan Christian) each won figures competitions. The Lyons narrowly missed out on their third runner-up finish in four years. Kinney topped B figures, while Ryen had the best showing in C figures. During D figures, freshman Jenna Calvino (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) placed third, and sophomore Laura Montes (San Juan, PR/Academia San Jose) took fifth in A figures. The Lyon team routine, performed by Calvino, Kinney, Montes, Ryen, junior Sylvia Syracuse (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore West) and sophomore Jenna Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden), was good for third. During the solo portion of the meet, Montes came in third, while Swinkin and Syracuse finished third in the duet. In trio, Kinney, Montes and Ryen took fourth, while Calvino, Swinkin and Syracuse combined for fifth. Baseball (9-4, 2-0) Runs Winning Streak to Seven with 3-0 Week, Sweeps League TwinbillThe Wheaton College baseball team, ranked 13th in the Collegiate Baseball preseason national poll, ran its winning streak to seven games with a 3-0 week, winning on Friday at Rhode Island College, 12-10 before sweeping the United States Coast Guard Academy, 1-0 and 15-1 on Saturday during the Lyons' first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action of the spring. Wheaton's winning streak ties for ninth in program history. At Rhode Island College, the Lyons built a 12-0 lead before withstanding a furious rally by the hosts. Sophomore Nick Kostaras (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) pitched six strong innings to earn his first collegiate win, yielding one run on four hits, before junior Josh Simmons (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save in his initial opportunity this season. Senior Scott Guillerault (South Portland, ME/South Portland) went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI, falling a home run shy of the cycle, while sophomore Paul Malaguti (Andover, MA/Andover) had two hits and scored twice. Junior Nick Pecora (Highland Park, NJ/Immaculata) had two runs and two RBI, while classmate Robert Foote (Walpole, MA/Walpole) added two hits. Wheaton took on Coast Guard in New London, Connecticut, as the home team after the contests were moved from Norton due to unplayable field conditions. In the opener, senior Chris McDonough (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) blanked the Bears on seven hits while fanning three and walking none in his seven-inning complete-game effort. Freshman Sean Munley (Trenton, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) drove in the contest's lone run with a two-out single in the fifth. Guillerault walked three times. In the nightcap, Wheaton scored the final 10 runs to break open a 5-1 game. Malaguti went 3-for-5 with two runs, while senior Jake Yagjian (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) also had three hits. Sophomore Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) had three runs and two RBI, while classmate Jason Clucas (Peabody, MA/Saint John's Prep) and freshman Tad Skelley (Wolfeboro, NH/Holderness School) each drove in three runs. Junior Adam Gingras (Woonsocket, RI/Woonsocket) tossed eight innings of one-run ball to earn his first win of the season. Guillerault is among the top five in a number of career categories at Wheaton, ranking first in hit-by-pitch (31), second in home runs (23) and walks (101), third in RBI (147), tying for second in sacrifice flies (11) and fifth in doubles (41). Yagjian is tied for second in sacrifice flies (11) and stands fifth in times hit by a pitch (21). McDonough is first in strikeouts (196) and tied for first in complete games (10), and he stands third in shutouts (3) and fifth in wins (18). Simmons is fifth in pitching appearances (45). Lieneck Draws First Career NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week HonorLieneck was named NEWMAC Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, March 16. In his first week as a regular in Wheaton's lineup, he earned his initial college honor. Lieneck batted .436 to lead the Lyons to a 6-4 record in Arizona, as Wheaton played eight games against 2007 NCAA Tournament participants, including seven that were either nationally ranked or receiving votes in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll. The catcher had at least one hit in each of the first nine games, going 17-for-39 with 11 runs, nine RBI, three doubles, one home run, five walks and three stolen bases. He slugged .590 with a .500 on-base percentage and fielded at a .988 clip. In his first at bat of the season on March 8, Lieneck launched a two-run homer against 14th-ranked The College of New Jersey, swatting his first collegiate dinger. Lieneck amassed three hits in four different games, including batting 3-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases against second-ranked Cortland State College on March 11. During the second game of a doubleheader on March 11, Lieneck went 3-for-5 with two RBI against Webster University before going 3-for-5 with three runs versus Hope College on March 14. The following day, Lieneck batted 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI against Montclair State University. Men's Lacrosse (1-3) Splits Pair, Including Upset of Nationally-Ranked EndicottThe Wheaton College men's lacrosse team split a pair of contests last week, opening its home slate by stunning nationally-ranked Endicott College, 11-9 on Tuesday for its win under first-year head coach Mike McCaffrey. The Lyons fell at Eastern Connecticut State University, 10-6 on Saturday. Freshman Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) scored four goals, including the game-winner with 1:11 remaining, to help Wheaton down Endicott, which was ranked 13th by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA). Cederberg became the first Lyon freshman to net a hat trick since Ellis Reavey '06 also had four on April 5, 2003. First-year Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) added two goals and an assist, while junior Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and sophomore Tim Horan (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) each scored twice. Senior Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) tallied a goal and two assists, while sophomore Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) turned in a pair of helpers. Classmate Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) backstopped the Lyons by making 13 saves off of 40 shots. At Eastern Connecticut State, the Lyons scored the final four goals but could not overcome the hosts. Landers tallied three goals, while Rasamny had a marker and an assist. Horn made six saves. Rasamny is nine points shy of becoming the 12th player in program history to reach the 100-point plateau. In addition to 45 goals, Rasamny is seventh at Wheaton in assists (46), as he is close to becoming the fourth Lyon with 50 career goals and assists. Women's Lacrosse (3-3) Drops Only Contest of Week Against Local Foe TuftsThe Wheaton College women's lacrosse team lost its only contest of the week, 21-6 at Tufts University on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Lyons had their home game against nationally-ranked Wesleyan University postponed until a later date. The Cardinals stand 13th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll. At Tufts, the Lyons trailed by just two goals with less than 19 minutes remaining in the opening half before the Jumbos rattled off 18 of the final 23 markers. Freshman Emma Doyle (Hamden, CT/Hamden) led Wheaton's offensive effort with two goals, while juniors Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) and Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) had a goal and an assist apiece. Freshman Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) made 19 saves. Senior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) continues her climb up Wheaton's all-time charts. She is now fourth in program history in career goals (132), as well as seventh in points (147). Moynagh Corrals Second Career NEWMAC Pitcher-of-the-Week HonorWheaton College softball senior Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) was named NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, March 16, drawing the honor for the first time since her freshman season. Moynagh played a hand in seven of Wheaton's 11 wins during its trip to Fort Myers, Florida, going 6-0 with one save, a 1.20 earned run average, four complete games and two shutouts. In 41 innings, she fanned 49 batters and walked only four while yielding a .177 batting average. During the week, she strung together a scoreless streak of 16.2 innings before holding opponents without a run for her final 14.1 innings. Moynagh won each of her six starts, beginning with a nine-strikeout four-hitter against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on March 8. She fanned eight more the next day against Albion College and helped her own cause with a two-run single. On March 10, Moynagh spun her first shutout of the spring against Drew University before striking out six Curry College batters the next day. During Wheaton's victory against Ohio Wesleyan University on March 12, Moynagh struck out eight. Her biggest day came on March 13, as she began the morning by notching a save in a win against the University of Wisconsin at Superior before limiting Bowdoin College to three hits in seven innings while striking out nine during a shutout win in the second contest. Men's Tennis (4-2) Splits Pair Against Regional Foes During First Week of Northern SlateThe Wheaton College men's tennis team, which is ranked 18th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast poll, split a pair of home matches last week, downing Bridgewater State College, 8-1 on Tuesday before falling to Skidmore College, 9-0 on Saturday. Against Bridgewater State, the Lyons won all three doubles matches before taking five in singles. Sophomores Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) won at first doubles, freshmen Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Cullen Garrity (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) were victorious at two, while freshmen Trent Faltin (Durham, NH/Oyster River) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) earned a third-doubles triumph. Altman, Hudgins, Little and sophomores Chapman Beekman (South Kingstown, RI/South Kingstown) and Eric Pelletier (Bangor, ME/Bangor) each won in singles. The Lyons got swept by Skidmore, which is ranked 13th in the region, but only after putting up strong showings.
