Women's lacrosse boasts trio of Lyons on NEWMAC All-Conference teamsMay 6, 2008 WORCESTER, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team had three of its players selected to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference teams during Tuesday's postseason coaches meeting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). It was the ninth straight year in which the Lyons had at least three players named to all-league teams. Senior quad-captain Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School), who became just the program's fifth player to garner all-conference laurels three times, was voted to the first team for the third successive season. Classmate and captain Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) was tabbed to the second squad for the second time in her career, while junior Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) picked up second-team accolades in earning her first such honor. Hurd paced Wheaton in scoring for the third consecutive spring, notching a team-best 37 points while finishing second with 29 goals and a career-best eight assists. Earning 17 starts, she added two game-winners, tying for fourth among NEWMAC players. In six league games, Hurd was second on the Lyons with 12 goals and 13 points. She turned in three or more goals six times, leading Wheaton to a 4-2 mark during those contests. Hurd will leave the school as one of its most prolific scorers, finishing fourth in career goals with 149 and fifth in points at 168. Dimick, who missed her junior season due to studying abroad after earning all-league honors in 2006, completed her senior season with a solid showing on the offensive end of the field. She scored at least two goals in eight of her last nine games, including notching a hat trick in four of her final five contests. Dimick posted team highs of 14 goals and 17 points during the conference regular season while tying for second among league players in draw controls per game. Overall, she placed second on the team in draws and fourth in each goals and points. Dimick ranked fourth in the NEWMAC in draws per contest. Grant had a breakout season for the Lyons, pacing the squad with a career-best 33 goals while taking second in points with a career-high 35. Converting on nearly half of her shot opportunities, she had one game-winner in 13 starts. Grant scored the team's second-most goals by a Lyon this spring with six in a March win over Bridgewater State College. During the five games in which she scored at least three times, the Lyons went 4-1, falling only to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the conference tournament opening round. Wheaton posted a 7-10 record this season, going 3-3 in conference play while finishing in a three-way tie for third in the seven-team league. As the fourth seed in the NEWMAC Tournament, the Lyons hosted a conference postseason game for the ninth consecutive year. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 5/6/08. |
