Three NEWMAC All-Conference runners lead women to second place at conference championship for fourth time since 2000, men take fifthOctober 27, 2007 NORTHAMPTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's cross country team moved up three placements from a year ago at Saturday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship, as the Lyons placed second on the strength of three all-conference finishes at Smith College. Wheaton has taken second four times since 2000. The men finished fifth for the second successive year. The Lyon women tallied 72 points in the 10-team meet, finishing behind Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) 50 points. On the men's side, Wheaton totaled 161 points among the seven-team group, as MIT took the team title after having seven of the meet's fastest eight runners. Senior Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) and juniors Amanda Rawson (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) and Lauren Reddy (Walnut Creek, CA/Carondelet) were among the top nine women's finishers on the 5K course en route to NEWMAC All-Conference honors, as the top 14 runners are recognized. Brousseau took second for the third consecutive year and came across in 19:23, while Rawson and Reddy picked up the first all-league accolades of their careers after placing third and ninth, respectively. Rawson trailed Brousseau by eight seconds at 19:31 and Reddy finished with a time of 19:55. Freshman Ekaterina Gould (Wayland, MA/Wayland) posted a 26th-place mark in her first collegiate championship, while sophomore Katie Pratt (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) was Wheaton's fifth runner to cross with a 32nd-place finish. Brousseau's freshman brother Matt Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) narrowly missed a NEWMAC All-Conference citation after placing 16th on the 8K course in 27:11, just five seconds off the last all-league winner. Classmate Nick Kacher (Waltham, MA/Waltham) placed 56th overall, while junior co-captain Scott Hafferkamp (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) and freshman Colin Fahey (Waltham, MA/Weston) tied for 67th. The Lyons return to action two Saturdays from today, when they will run at the NCAA Division III New England Championship on November 10 at Connecticut College.
