Stanton earns NEWMAC Co-Player of the WeekJanuary 13, 2003 NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's basketball forward Mike Stanton (Lynnfield, MA/Cardinal Spellman) earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Co-Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, January 12. Stanton averaged 18.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocked shots in leading Wheaton to a 3-0 week and 11-1 record overall. For the week, he helped pace the Lyons to a trio of non-conference wins over Emerson, Mount Ida and Fitchburg State. Against Emerson on Tuesday, Stanton scored 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go along with four rebounds, two assists and one block in an 82-68 victory. At Mount Ida on Thursday, he netted 10 points with four boards, two blocks and a steal. The highlight of the week took place Saturday afternoon versus Fitchburg State, as the 6-5 junior had a monster day, recording career-high totals of 27 points, six three-point field goals made, five steals and three blocks in helping Wheaton defeat the Falcons, 82-68. For the game, he shot 8-of-16 (.500) from the field, 6-of-11 (.545) from three-point range and 5-of-6 (.833) from the free throw line. Through 12 games, Stanton is seventh in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.383) and tied for seventh in three-point field goals made per game (1.9 3-pt FGM) and blocked shots (0.7 BPG). Stanton and the Wheaton men begin conference play this week, as the Lyons travel to Clark on Tuesday, January 14 at 7:30 p.m., followed by a return to Emerson Gymnasium on Saturday, January 18 against WPI at 2:00 p.m. The Lyons are a perfect 5-0 at Emerson this year.
