Rhode Islanders Gingras and Simmons to appear on FOX Providence

May 9, 2008

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College baseball standouts Adam Gingras (Woonsocket, RI/Woonsocket) and Josh Simmons (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) will appear on FOX Providence tonight, as the tandem will be featured on Channel 11's Sports Wrap segment of Eyewitness News First at 10:45 p.m.

JP Smollins, who is a sports reporter and photographer for Eyewitness News at WPRI / FOX Providence, spoke to the junior pitchers and 12th-year head coach Eric Podbelski at practice on Wednesday. Smollins will also provide game footage, which includes Gingras' last start against Johnson & Wales University.

Gingras, who was voted New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Pitcher of the Year in late April, leads the league's top staff in wins with seven, which is just one shy of the school record. As Wheaton's closer, Simmons has recorded a conference-best 10 saves in as many situations, tying for third in school annals in saves, and he is tied for fourth among all Division III hurlers in the category.

Boasting a 7-0 record with a 1.61 earned run average and 42 strikeouts in 61.2 innings, Gingras has allowed opposing batters to hit just .204. His pair of complete-game shutouts tied a program record. Gingras leads the league in ERA, runs allowed and earned runs surrendered while placing second in wins, opposing batting average and innings pitched.

After starting a pair of games during Wheaton's spring trip to Arizona, Simmons shifted to the bullpen, where he has flourished. Appearing in 16 games, he has fanned 32 batters in 26.1 innings while limiting the opposition to a .245 average. Simmons is second in the NEWMAC in appearances. At Wheaton, he is second in career saves (18) and third in appearances (58).

The duo has led the Lyons to a 32-8 record and a national ranking of 11th according to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). Wheaton is gearing up for its eighth NCAA Tournament, which is slated to begin on Wednesday. Pairings for the regional will be announced Monday morning.
