Profile
Scott Dietz begins his 10th year at Wheaton and fourth as assistant director of athletics for media relations. Promoted to his current position in July 2005, Dietz had served as the sports information director for five years.
Building the department from the ground up beginning in August 2000, Dietz is charged with promoting and publicizing Wheaton's highly successful 21-sport program that regularly ranks among the top NCAA Division III departments in the nation. Establishing news media contacts while overseeing the day-to-day operation of the department, his duties include creating press releases and feature stories, producing promotional materials, maintaining the athletics Web site, coordinating photography, and compiling statistics, record books and awards lists.
Since Dietz's arrival, Wheaton's teams, coaches and student-athletes have appeared on ESPN, CBS Sports, New England Cable News (NECN), Boston and Providence TV news stations, as well as in Sports Illustrated, USA TODAY, NCAA News and The Boston Globe. Dietz has also served as the host SID and primary media contact for two national championship events, 10 NCAA regional tournaments and several Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championships and tournaments.
Complementing his responsibilities at Wheaton, Dietz is a member of the NEWMAC public relations committee and a women's basketball liaison for the conference. He is on a pair of voting panels for collegiate baseball and soccer organizations that run weekly national polls. Dietz was recently a member of the ECAC Robbins Scholar-Athlete Awards selection committee while previously serving as a NEWMAC liaison for men's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's soccer and men's and women's swimming and diving.
Outside of the Norton-based school, Dietz has worked for the National Football League (NFL) and New England Patriots over the last nine seasons. Presently serving as an operator for the NFL's player participation project, he had worked on the Patriots stats crew and as a statistician and spotter for television and radio. An official scorer for the Brockton Rox professional baseball team since 2005, Dietz volunteered his services as a member of the media operations staff for the 2008 NCAA men's lacrosse championships at Gillette Stadium.
Currently a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and ECAC-SIDA, Dietz was awarded a district citation for excellence in writing from CoSIDA in addition to serving as a moderator and panelist at ECAC-SIDA Workshops. He was also a member of the local organizing committee for ECAC-SIDA's 50th-year anniversary workshop held in North Falmouth in June 2005.
Prior to being named Wheaton's SID, Dietz was employed as an assistant in the school's sports information office and as a seasonal assistant for the Patriots. Before relocating to New England, he served as a seasonal assistant in the media relations department with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Cleveland Cavaliers and as a marketing assistant at the University of Pittsburgh.
A native of South Park, Pennsylvania, Dietz began his sports information career at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing in May 1998. As an undergraduate, he served four internships at Westminster, University of Pittsburgh, Youngstown State University and the New Castle News.
