The Salt Institute for Documentary Studies:
Mission Statement: " We try to make something extraordinary out of the
ordinary. We seek to capture a moment in the lives of people around us, to do
justice to that moment. To do so, we work long hours at honing our craft. Some
people say we're intense. We keep trying. Our shooting might be a split-second
off. Our words don't quite describe what we mean. The page design will be cumbersome.
So we go back to work again. As many times as are needed. There are no competitors
here. There is no "right" way of doing things. We try try to help
each other step beyond the merely good. We don't fit into any neat categories.
We combine discipline and imagination, breadth and detail. When we succeed in
what we're doing, we sit back for a minute and view what we've created."
Wheaton has been affiliated with the Salt program, located in Portland, Maine,
for many years. We have sent many students to Salt to provide them with an opportunity
to develop and concentrate on their own projects. Most of these students have
taken one or two courses in photography and a number of courses in sociology,
and the Salt program allows them to blend these two areas into a visual sociology
package. Students live in the Portland area while they participate in the program
in housing that is available through Salt. For more information about this program,
please call Professor Andrew K. Howard at Wheaton college or write directly

The Museum School 5th Year BFA Program:
Wheaton College has designed a program, together with the Museum School, in
Boston , Massachusetts, to allow Wheaton students to earn a Bachelor of Fine
Arts Degree in addition to the Bachelor of Arts Degree they earn after four
years at Wheaton. Students begin to take courses at the Museum School, usually
in their junior year at Wheaton, on a part time basis. After graduating from
Wheaton, they then attend the Museum School full time for one additional year.
Upon completion of the Museum School requirements they are awarded a Bachelor
of Fine Arts degree. This allows for a smoother transition for those students
who desire to go on for a Master of Fine Arts degree, and enables them to enroll
in a greater variety of studio courses than are available at Wheaton, in our
liberal arts program.
Grants Availble for Wheaton Students:
The Wheaton Foundation Awards
These grants, generally of no more than $250.00 each, are intended to underwrite
expenses connected to academic work beyond normal requirements in a specific
course ( research expenses, materials, etc.), and are awarded twice a year by
the Committee on Admission and Academic Standing. Applications go to the Advising
Center and require the support of the faculty member overseeing the work. Contacts:
Dean of Academic Advising Vicki McGillin or Melissa Poli, Advising Office Manager.
Student Travel Grants
Students traveling to topical and professional meetings, singly or in groups,
with or without faculty members, for educational purposes may apply directly
to the Provost's Office for travel grants at any time during the academic year.
Contact: Lynda Marcoccia, Executive Assistant to the Provost.
Wheaton Fellows
The Wheaton Fellow Program grants stipends to students to pursue projects of
their own creation on or off campus in January and over the summer. Qualifying
projects may include: unpaid internships, community service, collaborative work
with faculty on on-campus projects, research in which the student is the primary
designer of a project which has an informal Wheaton sponsor, or other self-initiated
research leading to or as part of an Independent Study course. Other kinds of
projects may qualify for support, and students are encouraged to pursue innovative
project ideas and to design their own projects in consultation with the Filene
Center, which will provide forms and detailed guidelines. ( Student/facullty
research on projects in which the faculty member is the designer or " Principal
Investigator," however, will be funded as Mars Fellowships--see below )
All continuing students, except
( in the summer ) Trustee and Community Scholars ( who already have summer stipends
as part of their scholarships ), are eligible to apply. Contact: Dan Golden,
Dean for Work and Service Learning.

on projects essentially designed by the faculty member as part of his or her
professional research will be funded as Mars Research Fellowships. Normally
for the summer program students will be expected to be on the campus for eight
