Welcome to the Philosophy Department!
In this ever changing and complex world, the philosophy department seeks to cultivate young adults into careful and critical thinkers. The ability to understand complex issues and reason through them is an indispensable skill, valuable to all career paths and disciplines. Whether or not students take classes to fulfill degree requirements, the type of understanding they gain from learning to address difficult concepts and situations is an asset they can apply to anything from biological research to reading a newspaper. Thus, regardless of a one's major or career interest, philosophy classes give students the opportunity to develop the thinking skills necessary to address life's issues.
The department offers philosophy as a major and as a minor. Also established are programs for joint majors with Religion, Political Science or History, and joint minors in Environmental Studies, Family Studies, Legal Studies, Public Policy, Psychology, and Women's Studies. For more information, please visit the course catalog found here: Philosophy Department Course List
Students who major and minor in philosophy pursue careers ranging from graduate work in philosophy or another field, medical school, law school, or choose to take their philosophical education and apply it to the workforce. We invite students of any major or career interest to take philosophy classes.
