Biography of Mark Schafer, artist
For over a decade I have incorporated maps in my artwork as a way of playing with, examining, and questioning notions of place, history, and memory, and how we represent the world. My materials are paper and maps, my tools are scissors and glue (as well as needles and thread,) my technology is a combination of imagination and meticulous handwork.
I have exhibited my artwork from Boston, MA to Valdosta, GA and have mounted art installations in Somerville, MA and Banff, Alberta, Canada. In 2000, my collage map of the world "World Map No. 1" was awarded Second Place in the Valdosta Works on Paper XII Exhibition. My artwork is held in private collections around the country.
