Department of German and German Studies
Herzlich Willkommen!
The German department at Wheaton College is an intimate community of language learners, with interests in literature, in film, in theater, and in popular culture. We encourage freshmen to begin learning German at Wheaton and embrace students with previous experience in the language.
Majors and minors have the opportunity to go abroad to our very own program at the University of Regensburg, a 1200-year-old southern German university town near Munich.
German majors have won prestigious scholarships in the last seven years: Anna Venishnick '02 won a Fulbright to Germany; Laura Jones '03 won a DAAD fellowship for a 2-month internship at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg; Erin Tapley '04, Karin Seeber '05, Janet Turkovich '05, Courtney McPhail '05, Stefan Sirucek '06, Jeremy Berger '06, Leslie Dean '06 each won a Teaching Fulbright to Germany. Julia Bolt '08 won a Research Fulbright to Bulgaria.
What do they do with a German major? Anything they want: our alumni work as high school teachers or documentary filmmakers; or in publishing; or work in management with EF (the world's largest foundation for private education); even go to grad school in German, in international studies, or in theater & playwrighting.
For those of you just visiting on the web or thinking about joining us here at Wheaton, herzlich Willkommen! As for those of us already here, let's turn these webpages into both a workplace and a playground for all things German at Wheaton College!
