Projects and Initiatives

The Education, Science and Math faculties have worked collaboratively to secure grant funding to offer unique experiences for Wheaton's future early childhood and elementary teachers.

Internship in Education: Brighton, England

For the second year, 7 Wheaton students will travel to Brighton, UK for a two-week internship where they are placed full-time in classrooms at the Woodingdean Primary School. This experience enables Wheaton education students to see how national literacy and numeracy curriculum are implemented. The 2004 interns taught lessons, coached cricket and participated in a variety of workshops from curriculum planning to silk painting. In addition to their time at Woodingdean Primary, students also took advantage of cultural experiences in Brighton and London such plays, museums and walking tours.

Reggio Emilia

Recently, Vicki Bartolini visited Denmark International Studies (DIS) in Copenhagen and the Reggio Emilia schools in Italy. The DIS program offers study abroad opportunities for those interested in young children with special needs as well as multicultural perspectives on young children, their families and their early care and education settings. This past February, Vicki Bartolini and Marge Werner (Director of Wheaton's Elisabeth Amen Nursery School) were invited to participate in the first ever faculty/student study trip to Reggio Emilia. The infant, toddler and preschools there have been described by Newsweek magazine and others as the best in the world. Vicki Bartolini has been invited to participate in future student/faculty study trips along with other college groups from across North America.

MA Department of Education regulations for Teacher Licensure change yearly as do education requirements and forms. It is therefore critical that students contact the appropriate Wheaton Education Department faculty advisor to obtain the most up-to-date information and education minor requirements documentation.
