* - Elementary education minors are required to take Math 133: Concepts of Math. This course fulfills the math distribution requirement.
* * - Elementary education minors are required to take science courses covering basic principles and concepts of life sciences and physical sciences. Enrollment in both semesters of INT 198: Ponds to Particles is highly recommended in order to satisfy this requirement. If this is not possible, students should select one science course in the life sciences and one course in the physical sciences.
* * * - Elementary education minors are required to cover topics of economics and geography through this distribution requirement. ED 275: Learning in the Social Sciences covers all four social studies topic areas √ economics, geography, history and civics and government. Students must take an American history course and a political science course dealing with U.S. government and the founding documents. Topics in geography and economics if not addressed through enrollment in ED 275, must be addressed through separate coursework in these areas.
CONNECTIONS: The Education Department in collaboration with other departments offers licensure minors the following connections:
- 3-way connection: INT 198 Ponds to Particles & MATH 133 Concepts of Math & ED 385 Early Childhood & Elementary Curriculum
- 2- way connection: ENG 286 Children≠s Literature & ED 390 Teaching Reading and Language Arts

Topics in Arts, Health and Physical Education
Topics in arts, health and physical education are addressed throughout curriculum courses, pre-practicum, practicum and student teaching seminar. Additionally, elementary minors must attend required workshops focusing on these areas. In light of these activities, Wheaton elementary education minors are not required to take arts or physical education courses to fulfill their minor. However, if their schedule permits, we suggest that they choose from the wide variety of courses available to them. Students are also encouraged to consider independent studies such as "Integrating Art History into the Curriculum" or "Integrating Movement into the Curriculum."
CPR/First Aid
All elementary and early childhood minors must complete CPR/ First Aid during their tenure at Wheaton, on or off campus.
Note: With Wheaton's new curriculum, there may be a number of new courses that fit distribution criteria. We therefore encourage students to think broadly, seeking out the courses that best serve their needs and interests while keeping required distribution topics in mind. There may also be ways to meet elementary distribution requirements through the required "connections." Please check with Professor Bartolini or Griffin if you have questions.
MA Department of Education regulations for Teacher Licensure change yearly as do education requirements and forms. It is therefore critical that students contact the appropriate Wheaton Education Department faculty advisor to obtain the most up-to-date information and education minor requirements documentation.
