Major in Classics

The Department of Classics offers five different majors. For the interdisciplinary Major in Ancient Studies, click here. These major programs allow students to concentrate in either Greek or Latin individually, in the two languages together, or in the literatures and cultures of antiquity (Classical Civilization). All four majors require at least nine courses; at least three of these must be at the 300 level or above; a senior year thesis, one or two courses at the 500 level, is strongly encouraged. Complementary Classical Civilization courses offered in other departments that count towards the majors in the Classics program include:

  • Art 273: Greek Art and Architecture
  • Art 274:Roman Art and Architecture
  • Philosophy 203: Ancient Philosophy
  • Religion 110: Literature of the New Testament
  • Religion 210: Jesus and the Gospels

Courses in Classics taken in Junior Year Abroad programs and at other institutions may be counted at the discretion of the department.
